B:Music Jazz Fest & Summer School

A week of live Jazz performances and masterclasses in Birmingham

The brief

In partnership with Jazz FM, B:Music, the music charity responsible for Birmingham Town Hall and Symphony Hall hosted Jazz Fest between 23 – 28 August 2021. The week of music showcased the full spectrum of jazz, including performances from international touring artists such as Soweto Kinch and Yazz Ahmed through to local community bands. Alongside Jazz Fest, the Jazzlines Summer School opened its doors to young musicians, offering them the chance to see and hear some of the best U.K talent in action and learn alongside them. Broaden was engaged to attend and capture this exciting combined programme and deliver a series of promotional videos.

The process

To capture the essence of the Jazz Fest and Summer School we adopted a three-fold process:

  • Week-long shoot: Broaden attended the concerts, workshops and events in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall with a mixture of static, roaming and gimbal cams as well as lighting and microphones to capture the diverse programme.
  • Staged edit process: We edited a series of videos staged in line with a lean turnaround schedule. This included producing 5 minute live performance recordings, testimonial videos with Summer School students and tutors, snippets of workshops, and short promotional ‘hype reels’ of the overall week including for social media.
  • Liaison with music and marketing: Producing a large suite of videos also required liaison with the in-house marketing and branding team at B:Music, as well as with sound technicians to ensure high-quality audio and on-brand imagery, colour grade and general look and feel.
The outcome

The finished result is a consistent suite of videos which B:Music have been used online as a means of sharing the Jazz Fest, promoting future events, working with partners and sponsors, and for archival purposes. Each video brings the impressive setting of Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and the new Jennifer Blackwell Space to life, transporting viewers to the energy of the Festival.

“Broaden were an absolute pleasure to work with. They captured the spirit of the events as well as some great interviews for future marketing, we were delighted!”
