Symphony Hall: Live Sessions

World-class jazz acts perform at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall

The brief

Birmingham’s renowned music charity Town Hall Symphony Hall engaged Broaden to film a series of live sessions to be streamed online for remote audiences to enjoy. This continuing work includes with capturing sets from Snowpoet, songwriter and pianist Reuben James, Trish Clowe’s band ‘My Iris’, the Liam Noble Trio, five-piece Dorcha, and piano-vibraphone duet Kit Downes and Lewis Wright, each lasting between 30-60 minutes.

The process

We captured these live sessions using a multi-camera setup and threefold process:

  • Filming: Broaden captured the concerts and the impressive Symphony Hall space using a 4-camera setup, including a wide context shot, close-up static cam, roaming close-up cam, and roaming gimbal cam.
  • Editing: Broaden liaised with sound engineer Luke Morris-Thomas to edit the performances into coherent videos synced up with the high-quality audio recordings
  • Colour grading: Broaden carefully colour-graded and matched the camera angles, to emulate the dynamism and colour of a live performance in a concert venue
The outcome

The finished videos bring the audience into the Symphony Hall space, giving them the opportunity to watch phenomenal acts play top-quality jazz music in a stunning setting. They have been shared on YouTube and social media, and have contributed to the charity’s presence as a leading music organisation in the UK.

“The team were responsive, helpful, reliable and knowledgeable – we will definitely be using them again.”
